Pelé averaged almost a goal per game throughout his career and could strike the ball with either foot, as well as being able to anticipate his opponents’ movements. While predominantly a striker, he could also be a playmaker, providing assists with his vision and passing ability. He would often use his dribbling skills to go past opponents.
Pelé is widely credited with popularizing the bicycle kick – transforming it into “football’s most spectacular sight”.
He was a member of 3 World Cups for the Brazil National Team (1958, 1962, 19870)
He made is debut for the Brazil National team at age 16.
He is the youngest player to win a World Cup at age 17.
His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, is recognized as a Guinness World Record.
He played his entire professional career with Brazilian club team Santos (1956-1974) and in the United States with New York Cosmos (1975-1977).
Nickname – O Rei (The King)
After retiring in 1977, Pelé was a worldwide ambassador for football.
In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee.
He was included in the Time list of the 1oo most important people of the 20th century.
In 2000, Pelé was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
